HealthySoil and American Golf work together to conserve water
July 2011
Sandra Miller, Technical Representative for HealthySoil

Maintaining quality turf grass with reduced agronomic resources is driving the need to consider new approaches to turf and landscape management.

American Golf Corporation is the third largest golf management company in the world and one of Southern California’s largest green recyclers.  To further reduce water use, they are trying a new approach.  As of June 2011 they are implementing the HealthySoil Golf Course program to demonstrate how improved soil health and aggregate structure can reduce water use by 15% or more.  American Golf chose Mission Trails Golf Course in San Diego, CA as the beneficiary given its soil challenges and high water budget.

Although favorable weather conditions and increased water storage in 2011 ended mandatory water use restrictions, the San Diego County Water Authority warns, “Although a drought cycle has recently ended, the next one may be just around the corner.  Efficient water use and water management are a way of life for businesses and residents throughout San Diego County.”  Investigating a replicable model for water savings of 15% or more, while improving soil conditions, is environmentally responsible.  From a business standpoint, it’s financially responsible.

The HealthySoil Program combines Best Management Practices (BMP), Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and the fundamentals of soil science.  HealthySoil personnel perform an array of tests prior to and during the implementation of the soil management program to monitor improvements in soil performance (tests include infiltration, compaction, root growth, and chemical/biological soil analysis).
